Glimpse of Sicily was Caroline’s first solo exhibition, consisting of a series of images evoking the mystery, colour, and elegance of Sicily. The collection resulted from a number of road trips through the island between 2000 and 2005.
Caroline’s heartfelt empathy with the region is evident, as is its profound effect on her. The collection is virtually surreal, presenting vividly painted streets that resemble theatre backdrops, empty crumbling buildings, and religious icons laden with history, tradition and symbolism. Photographs of intense colour and almost tangible texture appear at first glance to be paintings, Three themes appear in the series: classical icons which represent the strong significance of religion in Sicilian culture, facades that evoke the grandeur of days gone by and the Fiat 500, which is the quintessential symbol of post-war Italy.
The importance of history and culture and their relevance to today’s society are apparent, themes that the photographer develops in later work.
